South Street and Vermilion Intermediate students give back
by Mrs. Greenawalt
December 16, 2009
Students attending South Street Elementary and Vermilion Intermediate School have recently had several opportunities to give back to their community and beyond.
The first opportunity to give was Heavenly Hats Day in October.
When Anthony Leanna of Green Bay Wisconsin was 10 years old, his
grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. He decided to start
collecting money to buy hats for people who had lost their hair as
a result of cancer treatments. That first attempt to make a
difference resulted in the Heavenly Hats Foundation, Inc.,
recognized by the American Cancer Society. Anthony is now 18 years
old, and this was the 4th Annual Heavenly Hats Day. Between our two
schools, over $400 was raised. This money will help buy hats and
also ship hat packages to hospitals and patients. We received a
letter and certificates of participation from Anthony. Anyone
interested in learning more about Heavenly Hats may visit their
website: www.heavenlyhats.com.
VIS’s annual penny drive to benefit Vermilion’s Operation Christmas
Joy was held from November 11-December 4. Each homeroom had a milk
jug to be used for collection. We learned this year that a milk jug
full of pennies weighs approximately 30 pounds and contains $55.00.
Members of VIS’s Student Council got a work-out Friday morning
carrying all those jugs of pennies. Mr. Brad Schwab, of OCJ, filled
his car’s trunk with our pennies. The grand total of student giving
was $878.71. Now, that’s a lot of pennies! This year, at the
suggestion of 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Truax, we held Operation
Christmas Jeans Day on December 4th. Staff members at South Street
Elementary and VIS were invited to donate $5.00 for the opportunity
to wear jeans. That small treat resulted in an extra $494.00 for
Operation Christmas Joy!
VIS and South Street have held an annual food drive for many years.
For the past four years, the food drive’s focus has been on quality
not quantity. We have challenged each student to bring in one
nutritious food item to fill their homeroom’s grocery bag. This
year, in conjunction with the bus garage’s Stuff the Bus program,
we hope to fill the bus with food for the Vermilion Food Pantry.
The food drive is being held on December 14-17.
